It was early on, right as I was getting into Malice Mizer and Dir en grey that I found L’Arc~en~Ciel’s new album Smile at Tower Records. These bands and their back-catologue are all essential to my musical growth, but it was Tetsuya’s stylistic playing throughout this album that first gave me a taste of what bass playing could be. Suddenly it wasn’t just an instrument lost on the auditory wayside, but the perfect balance between counter-melodic accompanist and rhythmic backbone.

Their sound remains one so vibrant and vital that one wouldn’t be able to guess that these guys just celebrated their 20th anniversary this past weekend. To further add to my ever-growing love and respect for these guys, all proceeds from their two-day 20th L’Anniversary concert will be donated to relief efforts for the Great East Japan Earthquake.
